The BALSAC Infrastructure and Its Use in Health-Related Research

The BALSAC database on the Quebec population has been in development since 1971. It is largely used in health-related research with projects on inherited and multifactorial disorders as well as on the genealogical and genetic structure of the population. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the development of the database and of the approaches used to conduct health-related research projects. I will also provide examples to illustrate the various types of research and how it has evolved in the past decades. Lastly, I will describe a newly funded initiative centered on the integration of demographic, genetic and geographic data and on the development of analytical tools to support research on the genetic determinants of health.

Hélène Vézina holds a Ph.D. in demography from the Université de Montréal and is professor in the Department of Human and Social Sciences at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Her research program touches on issues of historical demography and population genetics in a multidisciplinary context. She has worked extensively on the genetic and ethnocultural diversity of Quebec regional populations and on the demohistorical factors that have shaped this diversity. She has also been involved in projects on the genetic epidemiology of various disorders. Her research rests on the use of the genealogical and family data found in the BALSAC database which she has been using since her doctoral research on the demographic and genealogical aspects of Alzheimer’s disease. Since 2010, she is director of the BALSAC Project in charge of the development and exploitation of the population database. She currently works on a new initiative for the creation of i-BALSAC, a multisectoral platform for cutting edge research in the biomedical and social sciences.
